:: select a page :: welcome :: lejog :: 1000 mile :: autobiography :: my training :: personal bests :: races :: 100km & 24hr :: sponsors :: achievements :: news :: press releases :: calendar :: ask sharon :: gallery :: links :: contact us :: site map welcome to sharongayter.com ! this website was set up in 2003, long before mass social media interest. this was done so that you could follow my progress and see the races i was involved in. i am now on facebook and twitter for snippets of events i take part in, but i still try to update this website monthly on the news page. i am currently a member of north york moors ac and became a serious runner in 1994 when i completed my first 100km and 24 hour race, winning gold in the national championships at both events, still the only person to take both titles in the same year. this was at the age of 30 and gained my first international vest that year. between 1994 and 2011, i represented my country on 27 occasions, winning several medals as well as further national championship titles. my 100km best remains at 8 hrs 12 mins, my 12 hours best at 128.8km and my 24 hours distance at 226km (140 miles). towards the end of my international career i progressed to longer and more extreme races. in 2011 i was ranked world number 1 for 6 days on the road with my british record of 750km, a race i won outright as the first person. i also ran my toughest race that year which was the worlds highest race, la ultra-the high, a distance of 222km up to altitudes around 18,000ft in the himalayas. another race where i chicked the men and reduced the outright course record by over 11 hours. that year was quite busy and finished by breaking the guinness world record for the furthest distance run on a treadmill in 7 days. my distance of 833km added over 100 miles (160km) to the existing female record and nearly 50 miles (80km) to the mens record. it is rare that a female world record is better than the male world record in athletics! i have run over 28,000 miles of racing, over 1,500 races, all documented in 60 scrapbooks with race numbers and results. by october 2016, i had run 186 ultras, 114 marathons and 119 off-road races of near marathon distance, some 419 events of 24 miles or further. i have raced across deserts such as the libyan challenge, ocean floor race and badwater ultramarathon. i have done multi stage races such as marathon des sables, grand to grand ultra, fire and ice 250km, trans-alpine from germany to austria, switzerland and italy, verdon canyon, al-andalus ultra trail and trans-slovenia (winter edition). i have run multiple marathons such as moravian ultra marathons (7 marathons in 7 days), and more recently in 2016, orta 10 marathons in 10 days. i have run on roads, tracks, trails, mountains, snow and sand. i have set multiple world, veteran and british records alongside many course records. i have achieved much in my career which has been detailed in my book the clock keeps ticking, with much information on breaking the guinness world record running from lands end to john ogroats. this book was written at the request of many people that support me and follow my progress and want to know how i achieved running such long distances. i have had many staggering responses from those that have read this inspiring, motivating, funny, sad and personal. many who have read my reports say it feels like they are there running with me. it is my life story from a chapter on my life as a child, that may well have driven me to want to inflict pain on myself, to my humble beginnings as a marathon runner, my quest to run further into the unknown, from a bus driver to a university lecturer, a fun runner to a world record breaker and commonwealth champion. this is my life, lived the way i chose to live it, and lived to the full. you can now only purchase my book from this website – personally signed! as a veteran over 50 years old now, i am slower than i used to be but still able to run long distances and i still have ambitions to break more world records. there are many more races i have yet to experience and much desire to keep on running. you can email at ( [email protected] ). i am also on facebook and twitter (@sgayter). keep on running, set your goals and go an achieve them! :: what's new :: january 2018 news :: olympic torch relay photos :: e2e ireland - new record! :: treadmill 7 days - 2 new world records! :: athens 7 day race new british record :: autobiography now available to buy online. more info :: commonwealth 24hr report :: presentations commonwealth champion 2009 download tv report: libya run preparation 2008 :: sponsors find out who my current sponsors are and how to become one. go there
